A Story about Joyce, More Should Be Done to Honor Last Wishes

One that hits my heart with sadness and gratitude.

Some stories stay with you long after the final chapter is written. For us at Personal Care Calling Services (PCCS), Joyce’s story is one of those. Living in a modest single-story apartment in Northern Virginia, Joyce was a lighthearted, quiet woman in her late 70s who lived alone. Though she had a dear friend and neighbor nearby, we often serve as the "last line of defense"—and for Joyce, we became much more than just a service. We became a kind of family.

Joyce was a delight to serve. She didn't just wait for her daily wellness calls; she was proactive, often calling our system first thing in the morning to check in. She was awestruck by the technology we were developing, marveling at how our automated system could meet people exactly where they were. Beyond the daily check ins, Joyce would send us cards and small, heartfelt donations. She trusted us with the details of her life, calling to tell us about upcoming doctor’s appointments or asking for help researching a service to ensure she wasn't being targeted by a scam.

A Turn in the Road

Our relationship shifted from professional to deeply personal as Joyce began to face health challenges. When she reached out about dental issues, she worried—not for herself, but for us. She didn't want us to worry if her check-in patterns became inconsistent. That was Joyce: always thoughtful, always caring.

When she eventually stopped responding, the silence was deafening. After tracking her down through various hospitals, I finally reached her. She sounded hopeful, mentioning a move to rehab and a plan to return home soon. But the calls stopped again. After more searching, we received the heartbreaking news: Joyce had been battling undiagnosed cancer that took her life with devastating speed.

The Harsh Reality of Aging Alone

The sadness of her passing was compounded by a harsh reality. Because Joyce had no family to advocate for her, a landlord moved in quickly, hiring liquidators to clear her apartment for profit. It was a bitter pill to swallow. Joyce had shared her wishes with us; she wanted her belongings donated to specific causes she cared about. Seeing her legacy handled as a business transaction was a painful reminder of the "ugly side" of aging in place alone without a formal estate plan.

We felt a profound sense of guilt, wishing we could have done more to protect her final wishes. While we are not estate lawyers, Joyce’s experience has sparked a long-term goal for PCCS: to eventually partner with elder law firms to provide estate-liquidation oversight for our recipients who have no one else.

Our Commitment to the Future

Joyce’s story is why we do what we do. It highlights the gaps we are still working to fill and the deep, national reach of our mission. Though we are based in Florida, our hearts are with our recipients across the country, the seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities who truly have no one left but us.

We miss Joyce’s letters and her small, delightful voice. Her trust remains a badge of honor for this organization. We will never forget her, and we will continue to fight for more comprehensive services so that no one else has to face the end of their story without their wishes being heard. Daily Peace Of Mind will do all we can to help honor the last wishes of our senior recipients.

Thank you, Joyce, for letting us be your family. You are missed.
